Frequently Asked Questions

Common R words: rabbit, rain, rainbow, robot, rose, river, road, roof, and run. R makes the /r/ sound — a retroflex sound where the tongue curls slightly back. Beginning blends with R are very common: br- (bread, brown), cr- (crab, crown), dr- (draw, drum), fr- (frog, frost), gr- (green, grow), pr- (press, prince), tr- (tree, truck).

"Bossy R" (also called r-controlled vowels) refers to the way R changes the vowel sound before it. When a vowel is followed by R, it no longer says its regular short or long sound: ar (car, star) = /ɑːr/; er (her, fern) = /ɜːr/; ir (bird, stir) = /ɜːr/; or (for, corn) = /ɔːr/; ur (burn, turn) = /ɜːr/. R-controlled vowels are a key phonics pattern taught in Grade 1.
