How to Use the Graph Paper Generator

  1. Choose a grid type — Select from 12 types including square grid, dot grid, isometric, hexagonal, polar, and more.
  2. Set the grid size — Enter any spacing from 3 to 25mm to control how large each cell appears on the printed page.
  3. Select paper size and orientation — US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 (210 × 297 mm), portrait or landscape.
  4. Customize line color and weight — Use the color picker or choose a preset (blue, green, gray, tan, black). Adjust line thickness between thin, medium, and bold.
  5. Preview and download — The live preview updates as you change settings. Click Download PDF for print use, or Download PNG for digital documents.

12 Grid Types Available

Square Grid

The standard graph paper grid — evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines forming uniform squares. Best for math, plotting, and general use.

Dot Grid

Grid intersections are marked with dots instead of full lines. Gives alignment guides while keeping the page visually clean. Popular for bullet journaling and hand lettering.

Coordinate Plane

Square grid with bold x and y axes through the center. Designed for algebra, pre-calculus, and any work involving quadrants and ordered pairs.

Engineering Paper

A fine grid with every 5th line emphasized. Used in technical drawing and engineering sketches to distinguish major and minor divisions.

Isometric

A triangular grid at 60° angles. Used for drawing 3D objects in two dimensions — popular in product design, architecture, and isometric pixel art.

Hexagonal

A grid of regular hexagons. Used for tabletop game maps, biology diagrams, and tessellation projects.

Polar

Concentric circles with radial lines from the center. Used for trigonometry, physics problems involving circular motion, and polar coordinate graphing.

Semi-Log

One axis is logarithmic, the other linear. Used in science and engineering to plot data that spans several orders of magnitude on one axis.

Log-Log

Both axes are logarithmic. Used to plot power-law relationships and data covering very wide value ranges.

1-Point Perspective

Radiating lines from a single vanishing point on the horizon. Used for teaching basic perspective drawing in art classes.

2-Point Perspective

Lines converging on two vanishing points. Used for drawing buildings, interiors, and objects at an angle in art and architecture.

Cross-Stitch

A square grid with bold accent lines every 10 cells. Used as a counting template for needlework and cross-stitch embroidery patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the generator and the pre-made graph paper PDFs?

The pre-made PDFs are ready to download in standard sizes (5mm, 1/4 inch, etc.) with no customization needed — great for common use cases. The generator lets you set any grid size from 3 to 25mm, choose from 12 grid types, pick any line color, and download a PDF built to your exact specifications.

What grid sizes work best for different uses?

5mm (about 1/5 inch) is the international standard for math and science. 1/4 inch (6.35mm) is the US standard used in most American schools. Larger cells (8–10mm) work well for younger students and primary school projects. Smaller cells (3–4mm) are suited to dense engineering sketches or fine technical drawing.

Can I download the generated graph paper as a PNG instead of PDF?

Yes. The generator supports both PDF and PNG download. PDF is recommended for printing because it is resolution-independent — the lines stay sharp at any size. PNG is useful for inserting into documents, presentations, or digital note-taking apps.

Does the graph paper generator work on mobile devices?

Yes, the generator works in any modern browser on phones and tablets. The live preview and all controls are touch-friendly. For the best printing results, download the PDF to a desktop or laptop and print from there.

Is the generated graph paper free to use?

All graph paper generated on PrintableCove is free for personal, classroom, and homeschool use. You can print unlimited copies. Please do not redistribute the generated files commercially — if you want to share the tool, link to this page instead.
