Frequently Asked Questions

Every multiple of 2 is an even number, and students already know even numbers from counting: 2, 4, 6, 8 … Learning the 2 times table is essentially skip-counting by 2s, which most children practice in Grade 1. This makes the 2× table the ideal starting point for multiplication.

Multiplying by 2 is the same as doubling: 2×7 = double 7 = 14. Because children typically learn doubling before formal multiplication, they can often recite the entire 2× table using mental doubling before they've learned any other table.

Most students learn the 2× table in Grade 2 or Grade 3 (ages 7–9). Common Core Standard 2.OA.C.3 introduces even/odd numbers in Grade 2, which prepares students for the 2 times table. Formal multiplication fluency, including the 2× table, is expected by the end of Grade 3.
