How It Compares

Kindergarten paper differs from standard ruled paper in both line size and structure. The large spacing (often 25mm+) and dashed midline are specifically designed for children ages 4–6 who are learning letter formation for the first time. Standard college or wide ruled paper would be too small for this age group.

Printing Tip

For the most accurate line spacing, print at 100% scale. If printing double-sided, check your printer's duplex settings to ensure the lines align on both sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Primary grade writing paper with 19mm three-line ruling bridges the gap between large kindergarten paper (25mm+) and standard dotted midline paper. It is ideal for Grades 1–2 (ages 6–8) as students develop consistent letter sizing and word spacing. The three-line system (baseline, midline, top line) remains in place but at a smaller, more challenging scale than kindergarten paper.

Our kindergarten paper uses 25mm spacing between baselines — roughly 1 inch. Primary grade paper uses 19mm spacing, which is about 24% smaller. This smaller format requires more precise motor control and is appropriate for Grade 1 students who have already mastered the letter forms at the larger kindergarten scale. The dashed midline guide remains to support ongoing letter height consistency.

Many handwriting programs, including Handwriting Without Tears, Zaner-Bloser, and A Reason For Handwriting, use progressively smaller ruling lines across grades. Primary grade paper at 19mm is consistent with Grade 1 writing lines in most programs. As students advance to Grade 3, they typically move to standard dotted midline paper at 15mm or narrow ruled at 8–9mm.
