How It Compares

Kindergarten paper differs from standard ruled paper in both line size and structure. The large spacing (often 25mm+) and dashed midline are specifically designed for children ages 4–6 who are learning letter formation for the first time. Standard college or wide ruled paper would be too small for this age group.

Printing Tip

For the most accurate line spacing, print at 100% scale. If printing double-sided, check your printer's duplex settings to ensure the lines align on both sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kindergarten paper uses a three-line system with much larger spacing — typically about 1 inch between baselines. Each row has a solid baseline at the bottom, a dashed midline in the center, and a top line. The dashed midline is the key feature: it shows young writers where short letters (like a, c, e) should reach, and how tall letters (like b, d, h) extend above it. This three-line guidance system directly corresponds to how handwriting curricula teach letter sizing.

Kindergarten writing paper is designed for children ages 3–6, covering preschool (Pre-K) and kindergarten. It is also appropriate for Grade 1 students (ages 6–7) who are still developing letter formation. Once students can consistently form letters within the three-line system, they typically advance to wide ruled or dotted midline paper.

The dashed midline teaches the critical concept of "letter height." In handwriting instruction, letters are categorized as "short" (a, c, e, m, n, o), "tall" (b, d, f, h, k, l), or "descending" (g, j, p, q, y). The midline shows children exactly where short letters stop and tall letters continue. Without this guide, young children tend to make all letters the same height, which makes their writing harder to read.

The three-line system is used by Handwriting Without Tears, Zaner-Bloser, D'Nealian, and most other major US handwriting curricula. Our kindergarten paper is compatible with all of these programs.
