How It Compares

Dotted midline paper is similar to kindergarten paper but with a lighter midline guide. It is used for Grades 1–3 to help students understand letter height — which letters reach the top line, which sit on the baseline, and which descend below. Once letter formation is established, students move to standard ruled paper.

Printing Tip

For the most accurate line spacing, print at 100% scale. If printing double-sided, check your printer's duplex settings to ensure the lines align on both sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dotted midline paper uses a three-line row system: a solid baseline at the bottom, a dashed (dotted) line in the middle, and a solid top line. The dashed midline is the key feature — it shows students exactly where short letters (a, c, e, m) should reach, and how tall letters (b, d, h, l) extend above it to the top line. This guidance is the foundation of most Grade 1–3 handwriting curricula.

Dotted midline paper is designed for Grades 1–3 (ages 6–9). It bridges the gap between large kindergarten paper (1-inch lines, very wide spacing) and standard wide ruled paper (8.7mm, no midline guide). Students typically use dotted midline paper from Grade 1 until their letter formation is consistent enough to write without the midline guide, usually by Grade 3 or 4.

Kindergarten paper uses much larger spacing (about 25mm, or 1 inch) with a dashed midline — designed for children who are just beginning to form letters with large, uncontrolled movements. Dotted midline paper uses tighter 15mm spacing, which expects more precise letter sizing. It retains the midline guide but narrows the lines to prepare students for the transition to standard ruled paper without the training guide.
