How It Compares

The 1/4 inch grid is the US standard. If you need metric sizing, the 5mm grid (0.197 inch) is the closest alternative. For larger, easier-to-read squares, consider 1/2 inch graph paper.

Printing Tip

Always print at 100% scale (Actual Size) — never use "Fit to Page" as this will distort the grid dimensions and the squares will no longer measure correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Semi-log paper is used when data spans multiple orders of magnitude on one axis. Common applications in science classes include plotting exponential decay, population growth, pH titrations, and radioactive half-life experiments. A straight line on semi-log paper indicates exponential behavior, making it a powerful diagnostic tool for identifying the mathematical nature of a dataset.

Each "cycle" represents one decade — a 10-fold range (e.g., 1 to 10, or 10 to 100). A 3-cycle paper covers three decades total, for example from 1 to 1000 or from 0.001 to 1. This range is suitable for most high school and undergraduate laboratory experiments.

The X-axis is linear (equal spacing between all values). The Y-axis is logarithmic: within each cycle, lines are placed at log₁₀(1), log₁₀(2), ... log₁₀(9), log₁₀(10), compressing toward the top of each cycle. Plot your data directly — if the result is a straight line, your data follows an exponential relationship. The slope of the line gives you the growth or decay rate constant.
