How It Compares

Hexagonal paper cannot be used for standard mathematical graphing. It is purpose-built for tabletop game design, biology diagrams, and tessellation art. For math or engineering, use square grid paper instead.

Printing Tip

Always print at 100% scale (Actual Size) — never use "Fit to Page" as this will distort the grid dimensions and the squares will no longer measure correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

8mm hex paper is the middle option in our hex grid collection. Use it when 6mm feels too dense for comfortable labeling of each hex (common in tabletop RPG maps where you write location names in hexes) and 10mm leaves too much blank space per page. The 8mm size fits a comfortable number of labeled hexes on a Letter sheet — typically around 13 columns × 16 rows.

Tabletop wargames, hex-and-counter strategy games, sandbox RPG campaigns, and board game prototypes all work well with 8mm hex paper. The size is large enough to write a short place name or unit designation inside each hex while still fitting a meaningful game-scale map on a single page.

Landscape orientation is usually preferred for game maps because maps tend to be wider than they are tall — a landscape hex sheet provides more horizontal travel distance. Portrait suits maps of tall dungeons, mountain ranges, or coastal maps oriented north–south. Both orientations are available.
