How It Compares

Compared to 1/4 inch (6.35mm) graph paper, the 5mm grid is slightly smaller and is the international metric standard. If you are in a metric country or printing for a non-US curriculum, 5mm is typically the better choice.

Printing Tip

Always print at 100% scale (Actual Size) — never use "Fit to Page" as this will distort the grid dimensions and the squares will no longer measure correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

18-count paper matches 18-count Aida fabric (18 holes per inch), which is used for fine or miniature cross-stitch projects. Because each stitch is smaller on 18-count fabric, designs drawn on 18-count paper will stitch to a noticeably smaller physical size than the same design on 14-count fabric — useful for bookmark inserts, ornament covers, and fine decorative pieces.

18-count has approximately 65% more squares per inch than 14-count, allowing considerably more detail in a given physical area of fabric. A 100×100 stitch design on 18-count Aida finishes at about 5.6 × 5.6 inches; the same design on 14-count finishes at about 7.1 × 7.1 inches. Use 18-count when you want a smaller, finer finished piece.

Many stitchers use a magnifying lamp or magnifying glass when working with 18-count fabric, as the holes are quite small. A size 26 or 28 tapestry needle is recommended. The same applies to pattern planning — some crafters prefer to use the digital PDF on a tablet at 200% zoom rather than working from a printed paper chart for 18-count designs.
