How It Compares

Compared to 1/4 inch (6.35mm) graph paper, the 5mm grid is slightly smaller and is the international metric standard. If you are in a metric country or printing for a non-US curriculum, 5mm is typically the better choice.

Printing Tip

Always print at 100% scale (Actual Size) — never use "Fit to Page" as this will distort the grid dimensions and the squares will no longer measure correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

14-count Aida fabric (14 holes per inch) is the most widely sold fabric for counted cross-stitch because it balances detail and visibility — stitches are small enough for detailed designs but large enough to see clearly without a magnifier. Most cross-stitch kits, including those from major brands like Dimensions and Design Works, use 14-count Aida as the default. Our 14-count paper matches this standard, so a 14-count design on paper will stitch to the exact same dimensions on 14-count Aida.

On a US Letter sheet with standard margins, our 14-count grid provides approximately 100 columns × 140 rows — about 14,000 stitch positions per page. A 100×140 design on 14-count Aida would stitch to approximately 7.1 × 10 inches. For larger projects, print multiple pages and tape them together as a design grid.

Yes. Print at 100% scale (no "fit to page" scaling) on Letter or A4 paper. The 1.81mm squares on paper will match the 1/14-inch hole spacing on 14-count Aida exactly. If you color in the squares with colored pencils matching your thread colors, you will get an accurate preview of the finished piece's color composition and approximate size on fabric.
