How It Compares

Compared to 1/4 inch (6.35mm) graph paper, the 5mm grid is slightly smaller and is the international metric standard. If you are in a metric country or printing for a non-US curriculum, 5mm is typically the better choice.

Printing Tip

Always print at 100% scale (Actual Size) — never use "Fit to Page" as this will distort the grid dimensions and the squares will no longer measure correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cross stitch graph paper is a square grid where each cell represents one stitch position on fabric. The grid matches the count of the Aida or evenweave fabric (10-count means 10 squares per inch). Stitchers use it to plan original designs, adapt images into stitch charts, or resize existing patterns. Our 10-count version has bold accent lines every 10 squares (every inch), which creates a natural grid of "blocks" that make counting easier.

10-count means 10 stitches per inch — the paper's grid matches 10-count Aida fabric, where threads are spaced to give 10 holes per inch in both directions. A US Letter sheet at 10-count gives approximately 75 squares wide × 100 squares tall, enough to design medium to large cross-stitch projects. If you're stitching on 14-count Aida (the most common), use our 14-count cross stitch paper which has a finer grid.

Sketch your design on paper using colored pencils or pens — one color per square represents one full cross stitch in that thread color. Bold lines every 10 squares act as counting guides (matching the "tens" position in your stitch count). Once happy with the design, convert each colored square into a DMC or Anchor thread number. Many stitchers photograph their completed paper chart and stitch directly from the photo on a phone or tablet, reducing paper handling.
